A recent video game trailer might look a little familiar for many Floridians. Too familiar.
Rockstar Games released the first trailer for its hot upcoming game Grand Theft Auto VI, where players return to the state of Leonida, Rockstar’s take on the state of Florida.
The trailer reintroduces gamers to “Vice City,” which is based on Miami. The city depicts several Florida tropes and people throughout the trailer, including crowded coastlines, a woman twerking on top of a moving car, a monster alligator inside of a store.
After dropping the 90-second trailer early on Monday, Dec. 4, it has already received over 105 million views on YouTube.

What is Grand Theft Auto 6 about?
Set to Tom Petty’s “Love Is A Long Road,” the trailer introduces players to the franchise’s first female protagonist, Lucia, while she’s in prison. It was leaked back in 2022 that there are, seemingly, two protagonists — the one introduced in the trailer and her partner, USA TODAY reported.
The trailer doesn’t give a whole lot away for the action game plot wise. It is said that the two are caught up in some sort of “gang-related mess.”
The female protagonist makes one thing clear in the trailer: “The only way we’re going to get through this is by sticking together and being a team.”
Which city is in Grand Theft Auto 6? Has ‘Leonida’ been in Grand Theft Auto before?
Fans were first introduced to the fictional state and city over 20 years ago in 2002’s “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.” The game was the fourth installment of the GTA series.
“Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair, excess, and pastel suits comes a story of one man’s rise to the top of the criminal pile as Grand Theft Auto returns,” the description reads.
Back in November, Rockstar Universe took to X to share a still from Vice City alongside a still from GTA 6.
The official description of the newest GTA game reads: “Grand Theft Auto 6 heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet.”
What Florida landmarks, ‘Florida man’ moments can players recognize in Grand Theft Auto 6?
So should Floridians be offended or not? The GTA games are notorious for parodying off American culture and based on the trailer, Leonida will be stacked with ‘Florida man’ icons.
As for the tamer references, Floridians can definitely point out the Miami skyline and beaches, as well as the Everglades and animals within it. The trailer also includes possible shots of the Florida Keys and several downtown Miami clubs.
The trailer contains multiple shots of alligators where they definitely should not be, from neighborhood pools to neighborhood convenience stores. It also cuts to shots of rednecks partying in the mud and beachgoers partying on yachts.
According to IGN, one of the Florida references gamers can spot in the game is one to the ‘Florida Joker’, a tattoo model who went viral on the internet in 2017 after his mugshot revealed facial tattoos and neon green hair.
IGN also noted the shot of the naked man watering his garden looks like a riff on 2018 news reports about a Florida man who did yard work naked.
For those who are worried about having too much Florida culture seep into the game, there’s still plenty of plain ole’ car chases, robbery and clubbing that you can find anywhere.
Will Grand Theft Auto 6 only be in Vice City?
Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA 6 will expand its scope far beyond Vice City, with the Miami-inspired city just one part of the map.
As of Dec. 6, a full-fledged Grand Theft Auto 6 map has not been released yet.
When does Grand Theft Auto 6 come out; what’s the release date?
GTA VI releases in 2025, according to the reveal trailer.
Can I preorder Grand Theft Auto 6 now?
No, GTA 6 pre-orders are not currently available, mainly due to the game not releasing until 2025.
Will there be a Grand Theft Auto 6 Special Edition & Collector’s Edition?
Rockstar has yet to reveal whether there will be a GTA 6 Special Edition; however, experts says it’s likely given that GTA 5 featured both a Special Edition and a Collector’s Edition.
What consoles will Grand Theft Auto 6 be on?
According to Rockstar Games, there will be few platforms that will enjoy GTA 6 game plays, saying “Grand Theft Auto VI will be coming to Play Station 5 and Xbox X Series X|S consoles in 2025.”
